Alkapuri the capital of Gandharva, the grandest place in heaven, was ruled by Kubera the Lord of wealth.

Once Kubera went to invite Lord Shiva for dinner at Alkapuri. Little Ganesh, Lord Shiva's son who was playing close by, came running to his father and said, "Can I please come with you to Gandharva?" Lord Shiva nodded to little Ganesh and requested Kubera, if he would take Ganesh instead. Kubera was surprised to see Lord Shiva's simplicity, making a request to somebody so much lower in the ranks as himself.

"But I must warn you," said Lord Shiva, "My son has a voracious appetite." Kubera laughed, and said, "My Lord, We are going to Gandharva, how can there be a shortage of anything, in the land of abundance?" Saying so, he extended his little finger, which Ganesh held, and they left for Alkapuri.

When they reached Alkapuri, Ganesh was given the customary treatment for guests, he was bathed by maids in warm springs of scented water, covered with the most expensive perfumes and oils, adorned with the finest jewellery, silks and was made to be seated at the feast.

Ganesh started eating, soon he finished eating everything that was set before him. He emptied all his plates so quickly, that Kubera's servants were not able to keep their pace with him, so he started eating from the dishes of the guests beside him.

Kubera was shouting at his servants and Ganesh was demanding for more. They were running helter skelter. Running out of food, running out of provisions, grain and everything needed to prepare food. Ganesh started eating everything he could find. He was on a rampage, destroying everything that was not edible and gobbling everything that he could eat.

At one point Ganesh screamed at Kubera, "I am hungry! If you don't bring me more to eat, I am going to eat you!" Kubera's anger and frustration, turned to fear, fear for his life. He ran to Lord Shiva, begging him, he said, "Lord! Can you please help me? Your son Ganesh is destroying my kingdom."

Shiva told Kubera, "When you offer anything to anybody with humility, love and devotion, they will be satisfied. Take this ball of rice, and offer it to Ganesh with humility, love, devotion and his hunger will be satisfied. Kubera did just that, Ganesh was calmed and went to sleep like a baby.

This Ganesh festival:
Will I show off like Kubera?
Will I be as simple as Shiva?
Will my celebration pollute the environment?
Will mother-nature be happy with my offering?
Is this what we will leave for the future of our children?
Will I make my Ganesh with clay this year?

Is My Ganesha Dangerous?

In Bangalore a study done by the Central Pollution Control Board to assess the impact of immersion of Ganesh idols on the lakes revealed the following:
The acid content in the waters increased.
The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) increased by a 100%
The Dissolved Oxygen content increased during the day due to the agitation of waters during immersion and reduced at night when organic discharge increased.
The heavy metal content sampling showed an increase in metals such as iron which increased nearly 10 times and the content of copper in the sediments increased by 200 to 300 %.

Plaster of Paris is a calcium sulfate hemi-hydrate : (CaSO4, ½ H2O) derived from gypsum, a calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4 , 2 H2O), by firing this mineral at relatively low temperature and then reducing it to powder. While idols made out of naturally occurring clay ( shaadu in Marathi) dissolve within hours of immersion in water, PoP idols may take anywhere between several months to years to fully dissolve. In addition, when chemical paints are used to decorate the idols, these paints contain heavy metals such as mercury and lead, which seep into the water as the idol dissolves.

ఓహ్! గణేశ

అలకాపురి అనే ఒక గందర్వలోకం స్వర్గంలో ఉన్న ఒక ఆడంబరమైన ప్రదేశము, ఆడంబరమునుకు నిదర్శనం అలకాపురి. అటువంటి గంధర్వలోకమునుకు ధనాదిపతి అయిన కుబేరుడు చక్రవర్తి.

కుబేరునికి ఒక రోజు కైలశాదిపతి అయిన శంకరుడుని
దర్శించి తనయొక్క ఆడంబరతను చూపించాలని కోరికతో విందుకు
ఆహ్వానించాలనుకున్నాడు. అనుకున్నదే తడువుగా కైలశానికి బయలుదేరాడు. కుబేరుడు కైలశానికి చేరుకున్నతర్వాత,
నిరాడంబరతకు నిదర్శంగా నిలిచే బోలాశంకరుడును విందుకు
ఆహ్వానించాడు. ఆ సమయంలో అక్కడే ఆటలాడుతున్న బాలగణేషుడు వారి
సంబాషణ విని తన తండ్రి అయిన శివునితో నేను కూడా మీతో
విందుకు రావచ్చా? అని అడిగాడు. అప్పుడు శివుడు చిరుదరహాసంతో
కుబేరుడుని అర్ధిస్తూ "నాకు మారుగా నా కుమారున్ని మీవెంట
విందుకు పంపవచ్చా?" అని అడిగాడు.

కుబేరుడు ఆశ్చర్యపడి నిర్గాంత పోయి,
మాటలు రాక బాలగణేషున్ని తీస్కోని వెళ్ళుటకు అంగీకరించాడు.
శివుడు సంతోషిస్తూ, కుబేరునికి గణేషున్ని గూర్చి హెచ్చరిస్తూ
గణేషుడు అతిగా తింటాడని జాగ్రత్తలు చెప్పగా, కుబేరుడు
హేಳనతో కూడిన చిరునవ్వు నవ్వి గంధర్వ లోకంలో అన్న,
పానీయములుకు లోటువుంటుందా? అని శివుడుకు చెబుతూ
బాలగణేషున్ని తన వెంట తీసుకొని పోయినాడు.

తన లోకమైన అలకాపురికి చేరుకున్న కుబేరుడు సేవకులును పిలిపించి
బాలగణేషున్ని రాజ మర్యాదలతో తన లోకానికి ఆహ్వానించి,
సుఘంధ ద్రవ్యములుతో కూడిన పన్నీటి జలము తో
స్నాన మాచరింప జేసి, పట్టు పీతాంబర వస్త్రంలు, వజ్ర,
వైడూర్యముల తో కూడిన, నగలును ధరింప జేసి విందు
కు ఆహ్వానిం చాడు.

గణేషుడు తినటం ప్రారంబించినాడు. తినటం మొదలు
పెట్టిన తర్వాత తన పళ్ళెంలో ఉన్న పదార్థములు
అయిపోగా, మిగిలిన అతిదుల పళ్ళెములో
ఉన్న పదార్థములు కూడా తీసుకొని తినసాగాడు.
ఆ పరిస్థితిని చూసిన కుబేరుడు తన సహనాన్ని
కోల్పోతున్నాడు. కుబేరుడు తన కోపాన్ని సేవకుల పైన,
మిగిలిన అతిదుల పైన ప్రదర్శించ సాగాడు.
కాని గణేషుడు తన పనిని కొనసాగించుకుంటూ
దొరికిన ప్రతి వస్తువును కూడా తిన సాగాడు మరియు గణేషుడు
"ఓ! కుబేర నాకు ఆకలి తీర లేదు. నాకు
నాకు తినుటకు ఇంకా కావాలి," అని అడుగుతూ,
నీవు నాకు తినుటకు ఏమీ సమకూర్చలేని పిదప
నేను నిన్ను తినివేస్తానని! హెచ్చరించినాడు.

అప్పుడు కుబేరుడు భయబ్రీతి చెంది గణేషునికి
సరిపడేంత ఆహారము పెట్టలేక, ఏమీ చేయలేని
స్థితిలో అలకాపురిని విడిచి కైలాశం వైపు పరుగులు పెట్టసాగాడు.
కైలాశం చేరుకున్న కుబేరునికి ధనగర్వం కాస్త మాయమై
శివుడుపాదపద్మములునుచేరి జరిగిన సంగతి వివరించినాడు. అప్పుడు
శివుడు చిరునవ్వుతో కుబేరునికి ఈవిధముగా సెలవిస్తూ "తగ్గింపుతనంతో,
ప్రేమతో, దయతో పెట్టె గుప్పెడు అన్నము చాలు ఏ ప్రాణి ఆకలి తీర్చుటకైన",
అయిన నా కుమారుని ఆకలి తీర్చుటకు ఈ ఒక్క చిన్ని ఉండ్రాయి చాలు.
అని ఒక ఉండ్రాయి ని కుబేరునికి ఇచ్చి అలకాపురి కి పంపినాడు.

కుబేరుడు అలకాపురికి చేరుకున్న సమయానికి
గణేషుడు అలకాపురిని మొత్తంనుద్వంసం చేయసాగాడు.
కుబేరుడు భయ, భక్తులతో శివుడు ఇచ్చిన ఉండ్రాయిని
గణేషునికి నైవేద్యంగా సమర్పించుకున్నాడు.

ఈ నవసమాజంలో ప్రతీ గణేష చతుర్థి నాడు నేను సమర్పించే
కానుకలు గణేషునికి శివుడు పెట్టిన ఉండ్రాయిలా వుంటుందా?
లేక కుబేరుడు యొక్క విందులా వుంటుందా?

నేను ఆడంబరంతో సమర్పించే కానుకలు నీటిని,
భూమిని కలుషితం చేస్తుందా?

నా కానుకలు గణేషుని పైన భక్తిని చుపుతున్నాయా?
లేక నా ఆడంబరతను చాటుతున్నాయా?

ఈ సంవత్సరం నేను చేసిన వినాయక
చతుర్థి శివుడు ఇచ్చిన ఉండ్రాయిలా ఉంటుందా?
లేదా కుబేరుని యొక్క ఆడంబరతను చుపిస్తుందా?

నా ఆడంబరత వలన నీరు, గాలిలో ఉన్న శబ్దం,
ఆకాశం లో ఉన్న చీకటి, మొత్తం
ప్రకృతి కలుషితము అవుతుందా?
ఇది ప్రేమ అని చెప్పవచ్చా?
ఇది భక్తి అని చెప్పవచ్చా?
